Details- The Cardynham House is a B&B style hotel located in the tiny town of Painswick.  The hotel occupies a 15th-16th Century stone building and it seems not much has changed with the passing of time.  The doors are so short that you may have to duck to enter, the stairs are very steep and winding, and the floors creek as you walk (a bad choice for guests with mobility issues).  There are 9 rooms and each is carefully decorated in a distinct theme style (Highlands Plaid, Tuscany, etc.) all with 4 poster beds.  The best room is double the price of the others because it includes an indoor swimming pool (yes, a swimming pool!).  There is a lot of Old World charm here, but some of the decorator touches are a bit worn.  There is of course a welcome tray including tea and biscuits in the room, and the breakfast is delicious and includes home made pancakes.

Notes- The town of Painswick is located on the famous Cotswold Way footpath, but it is cut in half by the very busy A46, and not in the center of the best villages of the Cotswolds.  It is only 25 miles from Bath and about as many miles to the best part of the region.  The hotel has a Thai restaurant, The March Hare, which serves a wonderful dinner.  The staff is very friendly, especially John, who was able to give lots of suggestions for discovering the region.  The hotel offers some nice deals for 3, 4 or 5 night stays.  These are well worth it if you use this hotel as a base to visit other villages.

Quotes-  "I like to refer to this type of hotel as refined ruins, but I really enjoyed our stay, and would return again."  Steven Hurley, October 2003.
