Aix en Provence Hotel ReviewGrand Hotel Negre Coste Aix en Provence, France Price: $-$$ Travels with Friends Charm Rating: 69 Details- This 37 room hotel has just about the best location in Aix en Provence, right in the middle of the Cours Mirabeau. It is considered the oldest hotel in Aix en Provence, dating back to the early 18th Century, and is made up of two large mansions that have been combined. The result is a large central staircase, wide halls and tall ceilings with old chandeliers. The hotel also was the first building in the city to have an elevator. (You'll be glad to know that its been modernized and is not still the original one.) Notes- The rooms are divided into two categories. The standard rooms (smaller) offer less decoration and face the rear of the building with views over the rooftops of the city. The superior rooms (larger) have 18th century antiques and views onto the tree lined street, Cours Mirabeau. All of the rooms are air conditioned with mini bars and satellite TV. While we liked the charm of the rooms, we also felt they were a bit run down. If your definition of charm allows for Old World Tattered, then this will be a good fit for you. Private parking is available for an extra charge. Quotes- "Just about the best location in Aix en Provence. A fine choice in its price category for a short stay without a car." Steven Hurley, October 2004.
