Details- The friendly staff at this hotel make it special!  This 36 room hotel is located within a block of the Sendlinger-Tor-Platz, one of the city's original gates and a U-Bahn (subway) stop on a nice shopping street.  It is a 10 minute walk to the major sights in Munich.  The exterior of the hotel suffers from the post WWII look that plagues much of Munich, but the rooms are cozy.  The lobby is small but opens to a spacious bar and lounge where you can enjoy a beverage or play a game. This same area is set up with a very large and delicious breakfast buffet in the morning.  The buffet is one of the best we've ever had.

The hotel offers two types of rooms, Alba-Rose or Rustikana. The Alba-Rose rooms are decorated in traditional English style, while the Rustikana  rooms are slightly more modern in a pastel color theme.  Most offer a desk and chair, all have TV, telephone and mini bar, but in general the rooms are small.  Most of the bathrooms offer an enclosed shower.  The rooms do not have air conditioning.  In the rare event of a heat wave it can be warm and noisy with the window open.

Notes- Here is our run down on the rooms, if you would like to request one specifically.  There are 6 floors, each floor has 6 rooms (i.e. 101-106).  Rooms that end in 01 are single rooms and close to the elevators.  Rooms that end in 02 and 03 are average size and face the street.  Rooms that end in 04 also face the street but are a little larger (can sleep 3).  Rooms that end in 05 or 06 face the rear, although there is no view to speak of, it is quieter.  Rooms on the 6th floor have an attic style ceiling.  Our favorite of those is room 606.  Enclosed parking is available for a fee.

Quotes-

"Room 606 was smaller than the average American hotel, but well laid out and we did not feel cramped at all.  The hotel itself is delightful, the employees were a fantastic help and really made us feel welcome.  The location is very convenient to walk anywhere in the city, but not on a main street so it was relatively quiet."   Rick F., (Tampa, FL) May 2006

"The hotel was located perfectly!  Marienplatz (and the Hofbrau Haus) was in one direction (10-15 minutes walk) and Oktoberfest was the other direction (20 minute walk).  That just worked out perfectly."  Karen and Howard H., (Mission Viejo, CA) September 2005

"The room was spacious and nicely furnished, the breakfast was the best we experienced, the location was excellent and the woman owner was lovely."  Margie B., (Fair Oaks, CA) September 2004

"Acanthus Hotel was ideally located within walking distance to the Munich old town area.  The breakfast was full of delicious choices and set in a very charming room."  Diane M., (Sunnyvale, CA) June 2004

“I love the location of this hotel, the very charming bar and lounge, but most importantly the friendly staff."  Steven Hurley, June 2002 and December 2003
