Europe Hotel Reviews

We offer our free recommendations for small 3 and 4 star European style hotels in Austria, Britain, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Luxembourg. Our goal is to make recommendations offering authentic charm at a moderate price. We have personally inspected each of these hotels on frequent visits and receive no money or other consideration from them for being included on our site. These are places we return to again and again, and happily send our friends and clients.

Below is a description of how we rate each hotel. Our favorites score a charm rating of 75 or higher. A rating over 85 is most likely a 4-5 star hotel. If we visit a hotel and it scores below a 60, we won't even include it.

Location of the hotel: 20% of the total score value. A hotel must be within walking distance of restaurants, tourist sites and transportation in the old city center or a nearby charming neighborhood. The only exceptions are noted as being in unique country settings.

Rooms: 30% of the total score value. Room condition and unique character are most important. We consider room size, sound proofing, air conditioning, linens, lighting and comforts such as a sitting areas and television.

Public areas: 20% of the total score value. We look for features such as pools, gardens or unique elements that gives a local feel. We also consider the staff, elevators, breakfast room, parking, internet access and the lobby areas.

Dinning and Entertainment: 10% of the total score value. Our highest rated choices have a restaurant and bar or lounge on site. If not, choices are always within easy walking distance.

Bathrooms: 10% of the total score value. The overall cleanliness and condition of the fixtures is most important. We look for enclosed showers or tubs with a shower, hairdryers and high quality amenities.

Value: 10% of the total score value. The overall price compared to the items listed above is considered in the final score. To score above 90, a hotel must score near perfect and also be below $250 per night.
