Sights in Monte Carlo, Monaco

Monaco is a 371 acre principality with a population of 30,000. The town is perched between the cliffs and the sea and is home to the rich and famous. High rise condominiums fill your vision and streets buzz with cars. Beside money, the people of Monaco love their cars-fast and fancy. In late May-early June the famous Grand Prix of Monte Carlo takes place here.

The city is not pedestrian friendly. There are a lot of cars on steep winding streets that often do not have sidewalks. The streets are so steep that there are also elevators to bring you from one level of streets to another.

The Grimaldi Family acquired the lordship of Monaco in the 1300's, and have ruled over the city ever since. The title Prince or Princess of Monaco has since been given to their heirs. Price Rainier III is the current head of the family. His late wife, Grace Kelly was killed in a car accident here in 1982. Also famous are their children, Albert, Caroline and Stephanie. The main cathedral is the burial site of Grace. Highlights of a visit to Monte Carlo are listed below.

Palais du Prince- This 13th Century fortress was turned into the royal residence in the 15th Century. Thirty minute tours are available that allow a glimpse at the royal families life and include the throne room. Each day at 11:55 AM is the changing of the guard.

Napoleon Collection- Napoleon ruled over Monaco after the French Revolution. This collection is made up of items that he left behind including his famous hat.

The Casino- The world famous casino was designed by Charles Garnier, who also designed the Opera House in Paris. From 12:00 noon until 8:00 PM you may enter the first rooms of the casino in casual attire for a fee. The high roller salons are a bit further into the casino and require formal attire and an additional entrance fee. After 8:00 PM coat and tie are required. At all times you must be 21 to enter and have a passport.

Other Attractions: Just outside the casino is a beautiful park with plenty of photo opportunities. If you are not a part of the jet set, and really want to gamble, visit Loewes Casino near The Casino. The harbor area is a wonderful way to spend your time. Pick a café near the sea and dream of owning one of the large yachts you see come and go.
