Sights in Würzburg

Wurzburg is located in Bavaria (in the most famous wine producing area of “Lower Franconia”) and is in the valley of the Main River; halfway between Frankfurt and Nuremberg.  Art, culture and the Franconian wine are the essentials of Würzburg.

Don’t miss the prince bishop's residence, known as the Residence Palace (UNESCO World Heritage since 1982.)  This impressive example of baroque architecture shows the most important work of Southern Germany with the Court Church (Hofkirche) and Court Garden (Hofgarten).  It’s a masterpiece you will not want to miss.

The medieval fortress (Festung Marienberg), the town’s landmark, illustrates the history of Würzburg.  It was the prince bishop’s residence until 1719 and features the world’s largest Tilman Riemschneider collection.  From there you will have the perfect view over the Old Town with its masterpieces from many different periods.

Besides the Residence Palace and Festung Marienberg there are other important sights and attractions in Würzburg:

  • The old Main Bridge (from the 15th century) connects the old town with the Marienberg fortress

  • The Main-Franconian Museum (Mainfraenkisches Museum) has examples of the works of Riemenschneider

  • Dom (Cathedral) of St. Kilian (late gothic), St. Mary’s Chapel and Haug seminary church

  • Kaeppele (pilgrimage church) is in a beautiful spot; on the hill above the town

  • Lusam Garden (you can see the grave of Walther von der Vogelweide, the famous medieval minstrel)

  • The Center for Concrete Art Museum (Kulturspeicher Museum)

  Events and Festivals

The late-baroque Court Garden (Hofgarten) is used for festivals such as the Mozart Festival which is held between June and July.

The Bach Festival is in November.

Do you feel like going on a boat trip?  Then, don’t miss Europe’s most beautiful Rococo buildings in the town of Veitshoecheim. (about 40 minutes away by boat)

Wine-tasting is a must while being in Würzburg.  Don’t miss the spectacular world known Residence wine cellar, which is more than 875 years old.  Enjoy, and feel the ambience of the modern labyrinth wine cellar.
