Sights in York

York offers as much history as almost any other town in England, dating back to Roman times when Hadrian stopped here on his way north.  Today the city is surrounded by a 2.5 mile 13th – 14th Century wall.  This medieval wall can be walked on for great photos of the city and its Minster, one of the great cathedrals of England.  We recommend a minimum of two full days to see the major sights in York, three days would be even better.

York is two hours from London via high speed train or 5 hours by car.  Although a car is not needed in York, you will need one if you plan to visit the countryside or Hadrian’s wall, farther to the north.

Top Sights in York

York Minster- Considered one of the greatest cathedrals in the world, the present building dates from the 13th Century.  The highlight is the stained glass windows, most of which were added in the 15th Century.  For the strong at heart, you can climb to the top of one of the 3 towers for wonderful views of York’s rooftops and the surrounding countryside.
York Castle Museum- Don't miss one of the best folk museums in Europe, built on the site of York’s original castle and featuring recreated streets and rooms from the past 500 years.  Allow a minimum of 3 hours to see this museum.
National Railway Museum- This museum is a must for train lovers.  It features over 40 locomotives and rail cars including the luxury car Queen Victoria traveled in.
Shambles- This street was once the meat butchering area of York, dating back to around the year 1000.  Today the street is lined with fine shops, but the narrow medieval street is very picturesque.  Of great interest is the way the buildings lean inward, almost touching each other at their peaks.
Treasurer’s House- A fine museum filled with medieval treasures.
Jorvik Viking Center- This museum is more like a Disney ride.  You travel in a time car back to 1067 when the Norman’s attacked this Viking city.  A fun glimpse at history, especially with children.

Tours in York

Free Walking Tours- An army of free volunteers who are proud of their city’s history offer wonderful free walking tours.  These two hour tours meet at Exhibition square, across from the Tourist Office.  Since York is very popular the free tours can often number up to 50 people.
Haunted Tours- York is considered the most haunted city in England.  There are nightly walking tours that tell the stories of the ghosts who roam the streets.
