Staying Healthy in Europe

Your Health in Europe

Not feeling well or getting hurt is probably the worst way to spend a vacation.  The following suggestions can make a difficult time easier.

If you have had any health concerns that you have been ignoring, make a point of going to your doctor at least one month before your trip.  It can be as simple as a tooth that has been aching or discomfort in your back.  Getting treatment before your trip is much better that being in pain and worrying during your trip, or worse yet, having to seek treatment while you're in a foreign country.  Remember that you will be walking and taking stairs much more than at home.  See TIPS below.

In the weeks prior to your trip, make sure that you have an adequate supply of any prescription medicine that you take.  Keep them in their original containers, and bring along a prescription for the generic form of the drug in case you loose yours and need to get replacements.

Over the counter medications for minor aches, pains or stomach problems are widely available in Europe.  Pharmacies are not always open the same hours as in the states, but are easy to spot (usually a neon green cross) and often have English speaking help.

Contact your health insurer before you leave to find out your coverage while traveling in a foreign country.  Usually you pay the bill and then apply for reimbursement after your return.  If you do not have insurance, or your insurance is inadequate, consider purchasing travel insurance.  Visit our Travel Insurance page for more information.

If you become ill, ask the hotel where they recommend treatment.  They will know the closest and best services available.  They should be willing to call and make an appointment for you.  Most European pharmacies, doctor’s offices and hospitals will have someone who speaks English.

Tips for a healthy trip to Europe

  • Bring an extra pair of eyeglasses or contacts or a current prescription for replacements, in the event that you lose or break a pair.

  • You will do a lot of walking in Europe. Bring very comfortable shoes.  Never bring new shoes that you have not "broken in".  To prepare for your trip, start a walking regimen at home a few weeks before your trip.  You would hate to miss a major sight because your feet are sore and tired.

  • If you have any stomach or intestinal sensitivity at home, it will probably be aggravated by travel.  Mature travelers should bring antacids and a fiber product like Metamucil.  Changes in schedule and diet can be upsetting to regularity.
