Packing for EuropePacking Light If you are traveling independently in Europe, it is strongly recommended that you packing light. Do your best to limit your bags to one piece of luggage and one carry-on per person. It is strongly recommended that you bring luggage that has wheels. Remember, you might be in a car, on a train or subway, in a taxi or walking on cobblestone streets. Unless you are staying in a five star hotel, you will be responsible for your own luggage at all times. Typical hotels do not have bell hops and small hotels often do not have elevators so you may be carrying luggage up or down stairs.
We
recommend that you bring a one-week supply of essentials.
You should plan on wearing outer clothing items more than once.
All of your clothes should be able to mix and match, so the shirt you wear today
can be worn again in a few days with
a different pair of pants.
It is easier to do a little laundry during your trip than it is to carry two pieces of luggage up a subway staircase during rush hour. Some hotels have a 48-hour service for doing laundry, though this can be very expensive. An alternative on a long trip is to spend a few dollars on a two hour visit to a Laundromat. You might consider bringing some liquid detergent and a plastic hanger, so you can wash quick drying essentials in your hotel bathroom.
It is best to wear blended fabrics or synthetics for ease of care. Lightweight cottons or linens are comfortable and cool but can be wrinkly. Heavy cottons will stick to you in the summer air.
Europeans do not tend to wear shorts (except at the beach), but if you want to be comfortable, do not let this deter you. However, dinner attire is more formal in Europe and pants or skirts should be worn in the evening.
