Passports

Passports

Required Document

Citizens of the United States must have a valid passport good for six months after your expected departure date, to enter European countries.  You will probably only be asked to show your passport when arriving by plane or when using a rail pass on a train.  Don’t be disappointed if border patrols do not stamp your passport.

Passports are valid for 10 years and cost $97.00.  You can apply at a Passport Agency (appointment required) or most major post offices.  Passports for those under 16 years old are $82 and are valid for 5 years.  Renewals are less expensive.  Renewals can be done via the mail as long as your current passport is still valid.  Refer to www.travel.state.gov for further information.

Tips for Traveling with your Passport

  • Most hotels in Europe will want your passport number at check in.  Some hotels will even want to keep your passport as a reassurance that you will pay your bill before leaving.  On our small groups, Travels with Friends provides your passport number to the hotels at check in, but you may still need to leave it with the hotel.

  • Your passport is a vital legal document and should be treated as such.  Many travelers keep it with them at all times, while others put it in a hotel safe or keep it hidden in their luggage.

  • Bring a photocopy of your passport or give a copy to someone at home who could fax it to you in an emergency.  If your passport is lost or stolen contact the police and the U.S. consulate or embassy.  Having a copy will make this process a bit easier.
